Wynn Owen Winston, age 67, passed away on Monday, October 24, 2022, under hospice care in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family.
Wynn was born on January 19, 1955, to Forrest and Shirley (Behnken) Winston. He graduated from Atlantic High School in 1973 and attended Iowa Western Community College for Automotive Mechanics. He worked a short time at Merner Motors before resigning to take over the family farm in 1975 with his brother Jeff. During this time, he enjoyed several off-season jobs such as driving semis for the wheat harvest, and worked with his cousin Richard at Winston Service Center.
In his younger years, he was involved in 4-H and a member of Washington GEM 4-H club. He also loved going boating with his family and friends. He enjoyed restoring classic cars, riding motorcycles, hunting, was an active member of ABATE, and served on the Cass County Extension Council. For the last 30 years he had devoted his spare time to the Cass County Cattlemen, earning the Red Eye Award, Producer of the Year, and most recently a Hall of Fame inductee. Wynn and Greg Zellmer founded the grill team for them in 1993 for the Cass County Cattlemen.
For the last several years he has continued to enjoy farming and could often be found cruising in his gator to check on cows and crops. For the last few years, he has been enjoying camping.
Wynn is survived by his wife Carrie (Albert), his mother Shirley Winston, and his two children Jared (Lorelei) Winston of Pflugerville, TX, and Jeanna (Jesse) Rudolph of Harlan, IA. Six grandchildren Carter and Kira Griffin, Caleb and Kaitlyn Winston, Kyra and Chloe Rudolph. Brother Jeff (Sharon) Winston of Atlantic, sister Julie (Rick) Messer of Elk Horn, NE. Parent-in-laws Doug and Mary Ray, brother-in-law Jason Albert, Ryan (Alice) Ray, Draper (Angie) Ray, Garsten (Angie) Ray, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents Claus and Beulah Behnken and James and Thelma Winston. Father, Forrest Winston, Father-in-Law Mark Albert, and brother-in-law Courtney Ray.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home of Atlantic, IA. The committal will take place at Atlantic Cemetery. A luncheon will be held following the committal service in the reception room of the Schmidt Family Funeral Home.
Public visitation with the family will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA.
