(Avoca) AHSTW takes an undefeated record into the playoffs. The Vikings will host 4-4 Westwood Friday night in a game that will air on KSOM.
AHSTW coach GG Harris comments on the mentality of his group going into the postseason. “It’s exciting. We are very proud of what we’ve accomplished thus far, but we want to stay hungry.” Harris says, “We know we can continue to get better and there’s more out there for us, but at the same time we are going to enjoy each moment and really enjoy this process. Top to bottom the vibe is really good.”
Slowing down Jackson DeWald is priority #1 for the Viking defense. The Westwood senior running back has over 4,000 career rushing yards. “He is a very good athlete, but he’s just super tough. He gets so many yards after contact.” Harris say, “He’s a very disciplined player on both side of the ball.”
Coach Harris points out they’ve gone through a run-heavy district which has prepared them well for this matchup.
They are focusing this week on being precise with their assignments. “Angles. I don’t care if it’s routes, blocking assignment, filling in on a run, or pre-snap reads. Just making sure our angles and timing are varsity speed, game reps. We want to make sure those things are crisp and clean.”
AHSTW is 2nd in Class A offensive yards, 3rd in total touchdowns, and 4th in passing scores. Luke Sternberg has 1,421 rushing yards and 20 TD’s. Kyle Sternberg has completed 65% of his passes for 1,343 yards, 20 touchdowns, and no interceptions.
