(Guthrie Center) ACGC heads into week 8 with six straight wins and a chance for a district title. The Chargers host #2 Van Meter in this regular-season finale. The two squads match up for the district title for the second straight season.
ACGC Head Coach Cody Matthewson says the more teams play in these big games, the more it becomes an expectation. Meanwhile, the Charges have lost just three games in the past two seasons, once to a top-five team in Class 2A and the other two to the eventual Class 1A State Champion, Van Meter.
Coach Matthewson and his squad have reached a point where they expect to play in these games at the end of the year.
There is no secret that ACGC will run the football, and they do it well. The Chargers are averaging six yards per try, 2,462 total rushing yards, and 27 rushing touchdowns. Last week against Panorama, ACGC ran for over 500 yards and averaged 10-yards per running play. Time of possession will be a crucial factor for ACGC in this one.
Coach Matthewson says the key with this offense is to get to third and short often.
The Bulldogs have piled up 2,381 yards of offense, 819 passing, and 1,562 yards rushing. Ben Gordon is the leading ball carrier with 724 yards, 12 touchdowns, and a 7.6 yards per carrying average.
Austin Kunkle leads the Charger’s rushing attack with 578 yards and a 7.7 yards per carrying average. Through seven weeks, ACGC recovered four fumbles and picked off one pass. Van Meter has one fumbler recovery and nine interceptions.
