(Treynor) Treynor still has a chance to secure a home playoff game. In order to do so the Cardinals will have to find a way to top undefeated and top ten ranked Kuemper Catholic.
Treynor coach Jeff Casey says the Knights have a really good team with everyone in the program fully bought in to what they want to accomplish. “They have a ton of kids out. Their coaching staff does a nice job.” Casey says, “They are a tough team. They have a lot of really good skill kids and big, physical linemen. They are off to a really good start this season.”
Treynor took one on the chin a week ago against 3rd ranked Underwood. The Cardinals fell 54-0. “They learned they need to rally around each other a little bit. I have to do a better job of making sure they understand that even in a situation like last week against Underwood when things start to get underhand that they compete for an entire four quarters. That they understand how to put up a fight against a team that might be bigger than you or better than you in certain spot. You can’t just go out there and just show up. You have to put forth a fight. That’s on me as a head coach to get them ready for that. Hopefully we see a big jump this week.”
The Cardinals were without quarterback Kayden Dirks last week which dramatically changes the dynamic. The senior signal caller had passed for 977 yards and ran for 339. “We have to get better everywhere and everyone has to pick up the slack. The next guys up have to do the best they can. I always tell the guys that you don’t have to be the person you are replacing. Just be you, but you’ve got to be the best version of you you can be. We have to learn to compete and play physical.”
Unbeatens Kuemper Catholic and Underwood lead the district, Treynor is right on their heels at 2-1 in Class 1A District 8.
