(Area) Iowa’s Waterfowl season is split into three zones and all three will be open within the next couple weeks. as of this weekend.
The North Zone opened last weekend. The Central Zone had a two day youth season last weekend. The South Zone will have a youth season this weekend.
“Things are starting. Waterfowl hunting heavily depends on the migration. Where we are at is right near the ten year average. Low temperatures we had mid-week probably spurred some migrants.”
Bryan Hayes with the Iowa DNR Office in Lewis says water levels are a key factor. “The Western part of the state is dry again this year. It’s been a few years in a row we’ve been talking about dry conditions. That’s impacted population levels.” Hayes says, “Expect it to impact the fall flight.”
The regular duck season in the Central Zone is October 8th-14th and October 22nd-December 13th. The South Zone has Duck Season October 15th-21st and October 29th-December 20th. The first of three Dark and Light Goose Seasons is open now through October 16th in the Central Zone. The first Goose Season in the South Zone runs October 8th-23rd.
The zones are divided by Highways 20 and 92.
