(Greenfield) Nodaway Valley/O-M takes an 0-3 record into their homecoming game on Friday night. They’ll welcome 1-2 Interstate-35
Wolverine coach Thad Tussey says his team is looking forward to the matchup. “It’s Homecoming Week, we have our first district game.” Tussey says, “We’ll have to do the little things right, take care of what we can control, play fundamentally sound football, minimize mistakes, and play to our ability.”
They’ve shuffled the deck since their season opening loss to Mount Ayr and are trying to get their best athletes in a good situation to succeed. “We are just trying to get the ball into people’s hands that can make some plays.” He describes the players as athletic and adaptable. “Boston DeVault moved to quarterback. Dax Kintigh has played some slot receiver and tight end. Defensively he’s a linebacker so I like that mentality on the offensive side. Tyson Ross and Blake Lund are playing wide out. We’ll have maybe some moving pieces with Avery Phillipi, Eli Harris, and a lot of faces moving around in practice. It’ll be by committee.”
The Wolverines fell to Red Oak last week, 36-0, but were within 7-0 at halftime. “We’ve been happy with our defense. Our guys fly around and we get many hats to the ball. We are making plays and hopefully minimizing big plays.”
Boston DeVault had 13.5 tackles last week and Dax Kintigh made 10 stops. They held Red Oak to just 9/24 passing and Bradley Gebbie came away with an interception. It’s been an eventful last few weeks within the program and coach Tussey credits the players for their resolve. “They’ve been handling it well. I remind them that through life there is going to be adversity and maybe things that don’t go our way.”
