Riverside lost 41-0 in Week 1 to Red Oak. The final margin was lopsided, but it was just a two possession game at halftime and coach Darrell Frain says there were some positives. “We did have some kids that stepped up. Grady Jeppesen after having limited time at practice came in and did a pretty good job at quarterback. He had some nice completions and ran the offense well. Freshman Jaxon Gordon, a running back for us, did a very good job. Getting used to game speed may have been a little bit challenging, but as the game went on he got a lot better. One of our linemen that stood out was Jon Alff. Those three had good games, we just have to get a few more around them so we have a chance to win some games down the road.”
Frain reports they’ve settled into positions on offense, but the defense is looking to have some roles filled. “Defensively there are still some spots. We are trying to find 11 guys that want to run to the ball and make tackles and fly around. We can live with mistakes right now, we just need to get more aggressive on defense.”
St. Albert started the season with a 21-17 loss to Treynor. Speedster Brendan Monahan leads the Falcons. “They return about everybody. If you watch on tape they definitely were, in my opinion, the better team between them and Treynor, but things didn’t work out and they came out with the loss. Monahan is one of the state’s fastest runners playing tailback for them. They go with a straight power I and have the fullback blast you. We’ll have to control the line of scrimmage a little bit and hopefully contain him because if he gets out there is nobody on our team that can catch him.”
Coach Frain points out Wyatt Bell, Jon Alff, and Ayden Salais all had strong games defensively for Riverside in Week 1. Friday’s football coverage starts with the “In the Huddle” show at 5:15. The game will kick at 7:00.
