A funeral service for Shirley Darlene Woods will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 10:30 A.M. at the Central Church of Christ in Griswold with Pastor Tony Brandt officiating. Interment will be held in the Center Ridge Cemetery west of Elliott. The Rieken Duhn Funeral Home is assisting Shirley’s family with arrangements.
Shirley Darlene Woods, the daughter of Ralph and Lillie (Reichstein), was born June 26, 1930, at her parents’ home west of Griswold, Iowa. She passed away on August 13, 2022, at the Griswold Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Griswold at the age of 92 years, 1 month, and 18 days.
She attended rural school “Rose Hill” west of Griswold before attending the Elliot High School graduating with the Class of 1948. Following graduation, Shirley cared for her ill mother who had cancer, her father, and her youngest brother. After the passing of her mother, Shirley was employed as a telephone operator in Elliot and helped her father on the farm. Later, Shirley worked at the Union Carbide plant in Red Oak for several years until she retired.
Shirley was a member of the Center Ridge Church west of Elliot. She was an avid reader, and you could often find her tending to her lawn or her large flower and vegetable gardens. Shirley always enjoyed traveling to Idaho and Canada with her nieces. She also cherished the trips she took with three of her friends to England, Nova Scotia, Branson, the Great Lakes, and several other areas in the United States. Shirley also enjoyed taking bus tours with her friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; siblings: Gerald Woods, Margaret (Wes) Booton, Verlene (Elvin) Hallcock, Ardith (Floyd) Keaton, George (Lily) Woods, Phyllis (Elton) Lembke, Leta Woods, and Frank (Marilyn) Woods; nieces, Rozella Hallcock and Cheryl Lembke; nephews: Charles Booton, Elvin Hallcock, Elmer Hallcock, and George Hallcock.
Shirley is survived by four generations of her nieces and nephews: Rozetta Hallcock, Charlotte (Dick) Warness, Rosalee (Larry) Dorscher, R.J. (Janie) Lembke, Curtis (Barbara) Booton, Douglas (Denise) Lembke, Georgene (Jeff) Juhl, Lori Woods, Leslie (Michael) O’Donnell, Tony (Kelly) Woods, Kelly (Kaye) Woods, Adrienne Woods, and Larry Laas; numerous great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
