(Anita) Joe Wollum isn’t new to coaching, but he is a novice when it comes to distance running.
The CAM Activities Director is taking on a new role this fall. He’ll be leading the Cougar cross country squad. Wollum is the former head football coach and currently coaches golf and girls basketball. “We are going to try and get out and get some miles under our belt and have some fun. I’m trying to learn. I haven’t really coached a lot of these kids.”
CAM runners participated in camp last week. “We had two high school boys and we had six high school girls, so it’s going to be a small squad.” Wollum says, “The boys we do have back with Gavin Clayton and Carson Cary both have a ton of experience. Gavin has worked extremely hard this summer running so I’m expecting big things out of him. The girls side we feel we have some pretty good depth. Hopefully we can develop some of that and have some fun and see times go down from last year.”
Coach Wollum will be learning on the fly. “Coach Todd Russell is a great resource we have as our former head coach and I’m going to be meeting with coach Bruce Henderson to get some ideas to help us out and see what we can do to strengthen our cross country program.”
He outlines the first week of practice. “We are going to get some miles in. We’ll do some timed runs. We’ll really work on stretching and running form and get after it and have some fun and try to compete against each other in practice. Hopefully we’ll get some groups that can really push each other. Running isn’t always the most fun thing in the world to do, but hopefully we can make it fun and kids can get some work in.”
