(Mason City) Lane Spieker donned a CAM uniform for one last time in his decorated career. Over the final weekend of July he participated in the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Series.
The Small Schools West squad went 1-2 with losses on Friday and Saturday before picking up a 7-2 win against Large Schools East on Sunday. “It was really fun up there in Mason City for the three days. It was fun to be around the group of guys and get to meet them all and make friendships that will last for a while.”
Spieker hit 33 career home runs for the Cougars. Fittingly, he had one last blast before starting his junior college career at Iowa Western. “Sunday I played shortstop when we played Large East and I actually hit a home run that day so that was pretty cool. I got my ball and everything from that so that was a pretty cool memory. We ended up beating Large East 7-2 that day so we got our first win of the weekend and it was pretty cool to be beat a large team.”
Another bright spot from his performance came on the mound on Friday. “Friday we played the Large School West team which was pretty stacked. They had some Johnston players that won the 4A state championship. They just had a bunch of great players on that team. Friday I came in in relief to pitch. I struck out six people through three innings and only gave up one run. I came in with one out and runners on 1st and 2nd and that’s when I gave up one run, but other than that I think I did pretty solid.”
Spieker was presented with the prestigious IHSBCA’s Lanny Peterson All-Academic Scholarship and was nominated as the all-academic team captain.
