(Treynor) Atlantic downed Treynor 16-3 in a non-conference softball game at Treynor on Wednesday night.
“It was a big win for us in the sense that we took four days off, and you never know how the team will respond,” said Atlantic Head Coach Terry Hinzmann. “Are we going to be rusty and take a while to get back on the right track, or will we be rejuvenated after the layoff. We had a good practice on Tuesday leading up to this game, and it all worked out for us against a tough Treynor team that’s second in their conference and plays good competition throughout the year.”
Riley Wood pitched the win for the Trojans. In three innings of work, the sophomore allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits, struck out three, and didn’t walk a batter. Zoey Kirchhoff got the save. The 8th grader pitched two innings, allowed one run, on one hit, struck out three, walked one, and hit a batter.
“I thought Riley Wood and Zoey Kirchhoff pitched well for us,” said Hinzmann.
Lila Wiederstein and Malena Wood went three-for-four at the plate. Wiederstein drove in three runs, and Malena Woodward drove in two. Zoey Kirchhoff added to the cause with a single, a double, and an RBI.
“At the plate, we executed several different things-bunts, double steals, and those types of things, so I am pleased with what we accomplished on the base paths,” said Coach Hinzmann. “I’m glad to see Malena Woodward getting back into the groove at the plate after going through a concussion protocol. Lila Wiederstein led the attack offensively. Not only did she throw out a runner, but she went three-for-four with a home run and three RBI.
“Up and down the lineup, particularly in the lower half, did very well hitting the ball,” added Hinzmann. “Hopefully, this win will springboard us into the doubleheader at Red Oak today, as we wrap up the season with a JV/Varsity game against Lewis Central on Friday at Iowa Western Community College.”
