(Randalia, IA) — An eastern Iowa man has pleaded not guilty to animal neglect charges after three-thousand hogs were found dead on his farm. Forty-one-year-old Derek David Smith is accused of failing to provide adequate feed to the animals. KWWL/TV reports Smith had been hired to raise the hogs by Dubuque-based Valley Pork. The dead hogs were found June 2nd and 200 more had to be euthanized. If he is convicted, Smith could face up to one year in jail and a 25-hundred dollar fine.
