(Anita) The CAM softball team has a veteran group and the experience is paying off.
A win over Class 1A 15th rated Griswold was a highlight of the Cougar’s 6-3 start. Coach Larry Hunt comments on the keys to success. “I think defensively we have been pretty solid all the way around. We had a little bit of a let up the second game after the Griswold game on Saturday, but overall we have played very good defense and that has kept us in ballgames as we work to get our hitting consistent.”
CAM won 15 games last season and didn’t have a single senior on the roster. “In the last year or two nine out of the ten kids that are playing a lot for us have played a lot of inning the last few years. We have five seniors on our infield that dominate both corners, on the mound, and especially behind the plate with Marissa Spieker. We are very experienced defensively. It’s just a matter of getting consistent at the plate and getting back into the groove. When we do that I think we’ll be a pretty good ball club.”
Coach Hunt says Kylie Nelsen has stepped in nicely to fill a void at shortstop. Mallory Behnken leads the CAM offense with a .357 average. Kylie Nelsen is hitting .333 and Maddy Holtz .320.
Helen Riker leads the pitching staff with a 3-1 record and 0.57 ERA. She has struck out 39 batters and walked only three in 24 2/3 innings pitched. Emma Follmann is 3-2 with a 1.93 ERA. Opponents are hitting only .165 against Cougar pitching this season.
