(Glidden) Former Atlantic athlete Joey Walker leads his Glidden-Ralston baseball team into a matchup at Exira-EHK on Wednesday. The game will air on KSOM, with live video online HERE.
Walker got his first career head coaching win on Friday when the Wildcats downed Ar-We-Va 5-4. “We hang our hat on making 90% of the routine plays and throwing strikes. Last year we had guys trying to do too much on the mount I think, overthrowing. We had a lot of walks last year. That’s one thing I’ve tried to eliminate this year. Just throw strikes and let us make plys. And that’s what we did against Ar-We-Va. We scored four runs in the top of the 6th inning. We were down 4-1. Every night this year these guys have just battled. They are having fun out there. They want to be there and I think the culture is changing a little bit. They don’t give up. They battled in that 6th inning and they’ve been doing that all year, so I’m really proud of them.”
Coach Walker shares his take on Exira-EHK. “I don’t know who they will have on the mound, but last year Tyler Kingery gave us trouble. I think they are pretty much the same team as last year. We are going to go out there and compete and try to get the bat on the ball. I think we’ll have Colby Wallace on the mound to throw strikes and we’ll make 90% of the routine plays and try to compete and try to win the game.”
Sophomore Mark Lensch has had a solid start to the season at the plate. He leads the Glidden-Ralston offense with a .412 batting average. On the mound, throwing strikes has been a priority. “The effort and attitude for the guys. Having fun and bringing pride back to Glidden-Ralston baseball.”
Wednesday’s broadcast is part of a softball/baseball doubleheader.
