(Atlantic) The Atlantic Community School District is rolling out a new program this summer called the Trojan Summer Experience. The district’s ESSER dollars are funding the program mandated to use 20-percent of the money over two years for loss learning.
Atlantic School Superintendent Steve Barber and Communication Specialist Mallory Robinson presented the program to the Atlantic School at Wednesday’s special meeting.
“We don’t want this viewed as summer school. We include nutrition, physical, social, emotional, and academic aspects into this program,” said Atlantic Schools Superintendent Steve Barber. “We want this program to be viewed as a positive rather than a punitive approach to learning and a way students can earn credits over the summer. We believe this is an opportunity to do great work for those students who attend.”
Mallory Robinson, the Communication Specialist, says the academic focus is math and reading and enrichment activities in a one-room schoolhouse setting based on hands-on learning. She says two hundred students enrolled in the program, seventeen teachers in some capacity, 25 para-educators, two or three drivers, and food service workers. The program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30, four days per week throughout the summer.
The fifth through eighth graders will eat breakfast at Schuler and remain at that facility. The first through fourth-grade students will eat breakfast at Schuler and move to Washington.
Under action items, the School Board accepted the resignation of Deb Burton, Middle School Teacher Librarian, and accepted contract recommendations for Bodie Johnson, 9th-grade Baseball Coach, Jill Dodson, Kindergarten Teacher, Mary Jensen Education Teacher, and accepted contracts for the Trojan Summer program personnel. It approved the purchase of a 12 plus one school bus from the ACGC school district for $74,000.
