(Avoca) AHSTW is scheduled to take on Audubon in a high school baseball game on KSOM Tuesday evening. A video stream will be available through this link: Western Iowa Today Live Video
AHSTW went 1-1 in the opening week of the season with a loss to Boyer Valley and win over Stanton. “We played in two close ball games.” Viking coach Trey Brix says, “Saw some good things from some kids. Definitely found some things we need to work on. We are young. As long as those kids continue to give effort and hustle I am confident we will get them where they need to be by the end of the year.”
Nick Denning, Brayden Lund, and Jacob Coon will be the main guys in the pitching rotation this season. “They’ve all had glimpses of being pretty dominant pitchers and then they’ve had some cases where we’ve fallen behind in the count and struggled.” Brix says, “They are capable of being good pitchers. We have to mentally be ready to go out there and just attack everybody.”
Denning and Lund have been off to a good start at the plate. “Nick Denning does a lot for us out of the leadoff spot. He’s got a good eye. He doesn’t struggle with pressure. He can really battle with two strikes.” Brix adds, “Brayden Lund has driven a couple of deep balls so far for some doubles.” Brix says Aiden Akers has handled himself well in the batter’s box as well.
