(Atlantic) Atlantic High School Spanish students are conducting a canned food drive this Saturday to raise money for the summer trip to Costa Rica.
Jackson McLaren, a Spanish III student under the tutelage of Dan Vargason, says the cost of the trip is around $3,000.00 per student.” This trip is not affordable for everyone, so that’s why we’re doing fundraisers,” said McLaren.
He says students will be going door-to-door this Saturday from 10:00-to-1:00 p.m., rain or shine, and gathering donated canned food items. The cans collected will be rung in at Hy Vee; officials will send the receipt to the donors. “For example, if a donor says they would donate half, and the value came back at $4,000.00, they will donate $2,000.00,” said McLaren. “It’s a good deal, and we hope to gather a lot of cans and raise a lot of money which takes some of the financial burden off of the parents.”
McLaren, who initially took Spanish as a College requisite, is now in his third year of learning the language. “I started taking Spanish for college, but I like Mr. Vargason; he’s a good teacher, keeps the students interested, and makes the class fun.”
Those people not at home between 10:00 and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday can leave their donated canned food items on the porch, and the students will pick them up.
The approximately 30 -Spanish students leave on their ten-day trip in late July.
