(Audubon) Audubon is scheduled to host an early bird track meet for boys on Tuesday and girls on Thursday.
Nearly half of Audubon’s boys track roster is freshman. The Wheelers have 17 members on their squad this season. Head coach Monte Riebhoff says they have four seniors, two juniors, three sophomores, and eight freshmen. Last season Gavin Smith placed 4th at state in the 400 Lows, 7th in the 110 Highs, and anchored the 6th place Shuttle Hurdle Relay. “Gavin is back for one last year. He’s probably going to be in the lows, highs, shuttle, and then probably try and find a relay he can help get to state. He’ll be solid for us.”
Coach Riebhoff outlines some of the other key components. “Carter Andreasen is coming out. He hasn’t been out since junior high. He used to run the hurdles too. Hopefully when he gets healthy and in shape he’ll help us. Brandon Jensen is another senior. Brandon has been running for us for four years. He’s really improved this year in the preseason so far. We are expecting big things out of him. Our other hurdler right now is between Aaron Olsen, a freshman, and Logan Schmidt, a sophomore. That fourth spot will kind of be up for grabs.”
They’ve been working to get in shape during early season practices. 14 teams are scheduled to run at Audubon on Tuesday. “We are just trying to get them in shape with the early bird coming up Tuesday. I like the kids to be in 3-4 races as much as I can and use it more as kind of a conditioning meet since there is no team scoring. With eight freshmen this year I really want to see what some of those kids can do, so they are going to be in quite a few races.”
