(Atlantic) Atlantic High School will host a spring volleyball match between the Iowa State Cyclones and Omaha Mavericks on Friday.
The match is in honor of 2006 Atlantic High School Graduate Nathan Vert who passed away in December. Vert had been a manager for ISU volleyball from 2007-09 and his family will be recognized before the match. Atlantic coach Michelle Blake says she was contacted by the Cyclone’s Director of Volleyball Operations last month. “She had e-mailed me asking if we would be interested.” Blake says, “They wanted to honor Nathan and knowing that Nathan is a classmate of ours it was pretty much a no brainer.”
Blake expects a full gym and points out St. Albert alum Allie Petry plays a key role for the Cyclones. “We’ve gotten a really, really good response. It’s our spring break so I was a little bit worried about numbers, but I’ve gotten a lot of other coaches from other towns that have messaged me and said they are coming. I think we are going to get a really good response from not only from the Atlantic community itself, but Southwest Iowa.”
Doors open at 6:00 p.m. with the first serve at 7:00. The event is free to the public.
