Lowell Grant Jensen was born December 8, 1928 in Logan, IA (Hardscratch) to Grant and Mildred (Davis) Jensen. Lowell grew up attending Mount Hope country school until the family moved to Harlan where he continued country school in Shelby County.
While farming with his father, Lowell also worked as a postal carrier in rural Iowa because he had the right type of vehicle – a Jeep. Lowell served in the US Air Force from 1950 to 1953 and upon returning to Harlan he married Shirley Jean Gearhart. They raised five children; David, Pam, Lori, Rodney and Mark. While continuing to farm, Lowell’s favorite hobby was trapping. Before moving to Oklahoma Lowell drove school bus and worked for Western Engineering. Lowell and Shirley attended Bethel Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher, trustee, deacon and sang in the choir.
On his 60th birthday Lowell was hired as a Wildlife Specialist by the State of Oklahoma and worked there until the age of 70. Lowell expressed many times that getting paid to go trapping was the best job in the world. Later in life Lowell enjoyed feeding the birds at his home in Indiana.
Lowell is survived by his children David (Beth) Jensen, Pam (Bill) Volenec, Lori (Mike) Hoffmann, Rodney (Colleen) Jensen, and Mark Jensen; six grandchildren Willy, Mickala and Katie Volenec; Angel (Justin) Maschino, Holly (Rob) Hons, and Daniel Grant Jensen. Step-grandchildren Victoria and Taylor Abston, three great grandsons, Jude Hons, Hayden and Hank Maschino. Brother Ron (Bev) Jensen; sisters-in-law Sally Bugge, Carolyn Cloyd, Linda (Lynn) Watson; brothers-in-law Roger(Judy), Bill, Jim (Kathy) Gearhart; many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family and friends.
Lowell is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Shirley, parents Grant and Mildred Jensen, sister Mary Stangl, brother Byron Jensen, sisters-in-law Beverly Gearhart, Mary Cundall, Sharon Martinson; brothers-in-law John Stangl, Gene Bugge, and Daryl, Jerry, Ronnie and Tom Gearhart.
Lowell was taken from us too soon and passed into eternal rest on March 14, 2022 surrounded by family and knowing he was loved by all who knew him. Special thanks to Lowell’s caregiver of four years Joyce Dowell.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, March 26th at 11:00 AM at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 9:30 AM. Burial will be at the Astor Cemetery in rural Manilla. The Pauley Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
