(Nodaway) This week, a bill passed through the Senate that would allow raw milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream made with unpasteurized milk sold at the dairy where it’s processed.
Tom Shipley, Iowa State District #11 Senator, voted for the bill.
Initially, Senator Shipley had food safety concerns. However, his thoughts changed based on results from other states.
The Iowa Farm Bureau, the state’s dairy industry, and Iowa grocers oppose the bill. Enthusiasts say unpasteurized raw milk has more nutrients and tastes better, while critics say it contains dangerous bacteria. This bill will now head to the House Floor for a vote.
