(Harlan) Harlan Mayor Mike Kolbe is resigning effective March 31.
Kolbe plans to seek a seat on the Shelby County Board of Supervisors. While Iowa law allows one to serve simultaneously as Mayor and County Supervisor, he feels it’s appropriate to announce his intention to vacate this position before he begins collecting signatures for candidacy for another office.
In his resignation letter, Mayor Kolbe says public service has been part of his life since he arrived in Harlan 39-years ago. It began with local business committees and civic organizations and grew into City Boards and Commissions, county-wide organizations, City Council and Mayor.
Mayor Kolbe thanked the present and past Council members, City Administration, staff, and Harlan’s residents, who made his last eight years as a Councilman and Mayor so rewarding.
The Harlan City Council will begin taking applications rather than hold a special election. However, the public can petition for a special election.
