(Council Bluffs) A Council Bluffs man was arrested following a pursuit Friday afternoon.
The Council Bluffs Police Department says at 4:11pm, officers were called to the Speedee Mart gas station, located at 2301 S. 24th Street, for an attempted theft of a pick-up truck. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the vehicle, described as a Red Chrysler 200 with paper license plates.
At 5:15pm, officers were called to the area of Grace Street and E. Pierce for a Red Chrysler 200 with paper plates, attempting to steal a motorcycle. Detectives and police officers located the vehicle and tried to initiate a traffic stop. A pursuit started and the suspect vehicle went southbound on Bluffs Street. When the suspect vehicle attempted to turn westbound on 9th Avenue, it hit a patch of ice and flipped on its top. There were no injuries from the accident and 27-year-old Joseph Cias Smith was placed under arrest for traffic charges and eluding.
After further investigation he was also charged with Theft 1st, for being in possession of a stolen vehicle and a Fugitive from Justice Warrant out of Sarpy County. He was transported to the Council Bluffs police station where he was interviewed by Omaha detectives, as he is the suspect in possible additional charges in Omaha.
After he was interviewed by detectives, Smith was booked into Pottawattamie County Jail on Fugitive from Justice for a warrant out of Sarpy County, Theft 1st (Possession of stolen vehicle), Burglary 3rd, Disobedience to Sign and signal (4 counts), Eluding (speed in excess of 25mph over the speed limit), Reckless Driving and Unsafe Passing.
