(Harlan) Harlan earned a 43-40 girls basketball win on Tuesday against Lewis Central. Sophomore Hannah Sonderman hit the go ahead 3-pointer with :15 left.
Sonderman scored 11 of Harlan’s 20 2nd half points including three makes beyond the arc. Lewis Central sophomore Anna Strohmeier’s only field goal of the game was a big one for the Titans. She put the visitors up 40-39 with :22 left, but Sonderman answered to give Harlan the win. Sonderman’s triple made it a 42-40 advantage and she hit 1/2 free-throws in the final seconds to make it a three-point win.
Harlan jumped out to a 7-0 lead and gave Lewis Central fits with a full court press. After the Titans settled in they got right to work on the comeback trail. Lucy Scott’s 10 first half points led a rally that saw LC cut their deficit in half from eight to four.
They made it a 23-19 came by halftime and then had a 10-0 stretch in the 3rd quarter to take the lead. Lewis Central outscored Harlan 14-5 in the third quarter to claim a 33-28 advantage.
The Titans led for the majority of the 4th quarter until Sonderman hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 36 with 3:30 minutes left. There were four lead changes the rest of the way.
Sonderman led Harlan with 13 points while Claire Schmitz scored 12 and Raegen Wicks had 10. Lucy Scott scored a game high 19 for Lewis Central.
Harlan improves to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the Hawkeye Ten. Lewis Central is 5-5 overall and 3-2 in conference games.
