(Atlantic) The Atlantic City Council approved an ordinance amending the City Code by Dividing the City into five wards and five precincts during a special meeting this afternoon.
Redistricting is done every ten years and cities and counties must have their new maps drawn within sixty days of the state’s adoption of the U.S. Census. The City of Atlantic’s maps are due by the end of the day today (Monday).
The approval followed a public hearing in which there was one comment. City Clerk Barb Barrick received the written comment in her office.
Barrick explained how the population plays into deciding the precincts/wards.
City Councilman Gerald Brink felt the new maps were confusing and asked if there was a way to trade some numbers in Wards 4 and 5.
Brink asked why the City can’t set their own standards and let the Supervisors figure out how they’re going to comply with it. Barrick’s response…
The Council voted 4 to 1 to waive the rules for the second and third reading of the ordinance and approved all three readings of the ordinance. Gerald Brink voted no. Dana Halder was not present.
