Update: The First Day Hike scheduled for 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 1st at Prairie Rose State Park has been cancelled due to the incoming snowstorm.
Previous Story:
(Harlan) First Day Hikes will be held throughout the state of Iowa on Saturday.
Brent Martens will lead activity at Prairie Rose State Park. Naturalist Christina Roelofs says you can meet at 8:00 a.m. in the gravel parking lot for the east trail. The starting location is on the north side of the bridge on M47. “They are going to walk out on the trail that goes around that side of the lake. I think they plan is to walk out to the bridge which is a bout 1/3 of the way and then come back, but anyone that wants to continue on and do the full two miles can do that. Of course dress for the weather with that one.”
This is a nation wide event with several participating parks in Iowa. “Every state participates in this. I think we have about 20 that have official led hikes through Iowa State Parks. I know they are offering a promotion through the state park app.”
If you check into one of the over 50 participating state parks on the State Park Passport from Friday, December 31st, 2021 through Sunday, January 2nd, 2022 you can get entered for a prize drawing of a 2-night stay in a cabin at Lake Darling State Park.
