(Elk Horn) After an early season loss to West Harrison, the Exira-EHK boys basketball team has battled back and remains in the thick of things in the Rolling Valley Conference race.
The Spartans got on track with defense. Coach Doug Newton’s squad relies on three juniors and six sophomores in their regular rotation. “They are kind of figuring out what we are trying to get at when we say things like where we want the ball funneled to and how we are going to guard the post and how we are going to handle ball screens and such. Part of it is just getting some things figured out with repetition at the varsity level. Even though some of them played a lot last year we are still pretty young and you have to kind of roll with the punches.”
The Spartans will get some scrimmage opportunities in during the break. “New Year’s Day we are going to go up to Greene County so Greene County will be there and Perry and I think Manson NW Webster. Some teams that we haven’t seen before. Greene County is bigger than we are. We have a couple of things we’d like to put in and there’s no better time to try that than during a scrimmage against a team you won’t see the rest of the year.”
The next game for Exira-EHK is January 4th at Woodbine. The Spartans have had a balanced scoring attack this season with Cash Emgarten, Easton Nelson, Aiden Flathers, Trey Petersen, and Jackson Radcliff all averaging between 7 and 12 points per game.
