(Anita) CAM grinded out a 40-32 boys basketball decision over Boyer Valley on Friday in Anita. The Cougars had a 10-0 run in the first quarter to take an eight point lead and held off a couple of Bulldog runs.
Offense was hard to come by in this one. Outside of CAM’s early spurt, the Cougars managed just six points the rest of the half and led 16-13 at the break. They were outscored 8-2 in the 2nd quarter to see their nine point edge slip to three. The 3rd frame, which featured 15 total points, was tight throughout as Drew Volkmann carried Boyer Valley’s offense. He posted three makes beyond the arc. CAM built a 23-17 lead, but settled for a 23-21 advantage entering the 4th.
A Boyer Valley free-throw at the start of the 4th snugged it up to a one point game, but they missed a free-throw that would have tied it and then saw CAM go on a 9-0 run. Sam Foreman converted a 3-point followed by a pair of Colby Rich 3-pointers from the left corner. The quick start to the 4th put CAM in front 32-22 and essentially put the game out of reach. Boyer Valley got as close as 34-30, but CAM connected on four straight free-throws down the stretch to preserve the win. Rich hit two and Lane Spieker drained a couple at the line.
Rich had a game high 14 points and Foreman scored 13. Spieker added 7 for CAM which sits at 6-1 at the holiday break. Boyer Valley falls to 4-2 ahead of a Tuesday matchup with Exira-EHK. Volkmann scored 11 for the Bulldogs and Carsan Wood had 5.
