(Area) Deer hunters take to the field Saturday morning for the opening of the shotgun season.
The Iowa DNR anticipates a lot of hunters will participate. “During the two shotgun deer seasons we expect nearly 60,000 Iowans to take to the field wearing that blaze orange and pursuing those deer.”
Bryan Hayes with the DNR Office in Lewis provides a glimpse at the population. “Our deer biologist indicates that the deer herd is stable across the state. Expect similar deer numbers as what you saw last year. Iowa DNR manages that population to provide a harvest between 100,000 and 120,000 deer annually.”
Last year Iowa hunters reported harvesting 109,000 deer.
