(Avoca) AHSTW has improved their boys basketball win total for three straight seasons and went 20-3 last year.
The Vikings ended up in a substate final where they lost to Treynor. They bring back all five starters and with the way things have been trending it’s easy to get excited for the year. “Everybody is healthy. They are excited to have a basketball in their hand and they are practicing really hard. Expectations are high, the standard has been set, and we are excited to get things underway.”
Head coach GG Harris has a prospective lineup that features Raydden Grobe, Kyle Sternberg, Brayden Lund, Cole Scheffler, and Nick Denning. They’ll likely have a deeper supporting cast than they did a year ago. The Vikings accomplished many of their goals last season including a Western Iowa Conference Championship, but a state tourney bid was something they came up short of. “We have to find a way to remain consistent in some of those big games. We really changed the culture here and talked about practicing at a high level and being elite. We did that the majority of the time. We have to add depth. We can’t got a whole season with just five or six guys.”
Grobe posted 18.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game last season. Brayden Lund posted 17.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Kyle Sternberg averaged 16.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Cole Scheffler contributed per game averages of 5.6 points, 4.8 assists, and 2.7 steals.
We’ll have the AHSTW boys on the air on Tuesday when they host Riverside. Coverage starts at 5:45 p.m. with the girls game tipping at 6:00 and the boys contest to follow.
