(Avoca) AHSTW girls basketball has just one senior and one junior on the roster. The Lady Vikes have gotten off to an 0-2 start, but coach Jill Vanderhoof says they are learning a lot.
Coach Vanderhoof has seen progress from her team’s season opening 53-22 loss against Woodbine to their 66-37 setback against CAM. “We are able to learn a lot from game to game so that’s huge and that’s a very impressive feat for us.” Vanderhoof says, “They are resilient and they are able to go back and forget the last game we played and just learn from that.”
Players like Saydi Paulen, Rylie Knop, and Delaney Goshorn have been thrust into large roles. Goshorn is leading the team in scoring at 12.5 points per game. “The core is probably from that sophomore group because we have so many of them and they’ve played together for so long, but our junior Ellie Peterson has played some minutes for varsity in the past so she’ll be a big help.”
AHSTW plays Riverside on Tuesday and we’ll have coverage of it for you. Coach Vanderhoof feels their two games of experiences so far this season will be an advantage on Riverside which is in their season opener. “We have two games under our belt which is great because we did have some nerves in that first game, but the second game was a completely different team. They were able to settle in and play.”
The girls game tips at 6:00 and the boys game will follow. We’ll have it available to view at WesternIowaToday.com as well and you can listen on 96.5 FM KSOM.
