(Anita) The 2021 CAM football team made program history on Thursday night. The Cougars are heading to the Iowa High School State Football semi-finals in the Dome at Cedar Falls on Wednesday, November 10. The Cougars downed Newell-Fonda, 64-13 in the quarterfinals at Anita on Wednesday night.
“I am so happy to be a part of this and to see the joy on these people’s faces and our kids, and everything else, that’s all that really matters to me,” said CAM Head Coach Barry Bower. “We get to go to the Dome for the first time in the history of the program, and that’s Anita, and Cumberland and Massena’s, and to be very honest with you, this win is for the people that came before me, Coach Downer, Coach Lage, Coach Mehrfhoff and Coach Woolum. They deserve this as much as anybody else.”
CAM rushed for 447 yards, led by Lane Spieker’s 20-carries for 396-yards, and scored seven touchdowns. Joe Kaufman led the defense with 16-tackles. CAM scored eight touchdowns and converted on all eight two-point conversions.
On the Cougar’s first possession, Spieker exploded for 69-yards and a touchdown, and the home team never trailed. Newell-Fonda countered with a Mason Dicks to Ryan Greenfield pass setting a short run for the senior quarterback to bring the visitors within two -points 8-6, but that is as close as they would get.
Cade Ticknor broke loose on a 45-yard run with 3:59 left in the first quarter, followed by Spiekers four straight touchdown runs of 26, 41, 70, and one-yard. The senior now has 63-rushing touchdowns on the season tops in the state. The Cougars led 48-6 at the break.
The second half breezed by with the running clock. Spieker scored twice more on runs of 26, and 44-yards. The Mustangs managed a late-game score before the game settled out at 64-13.
“The kids focused on the game plan all week; we were worried about their athleticism, and the scrambles and everything else, but our kids rocked it tonight,” said Bower.
CAM will face Audubon in the semifinals at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 10.
