(Winterset) The Class 4A Football Playoffs kick off on Friday night and the Winterset Huskies will be hosting Clear Creek-Amana.
Zach Sweeney, head coach at Winterset, says the Clippers have some good skill kids and run a similar scheme to a lot of the teams they saw throughout the year. The Huskies ended up as the District 6 runner-up in the league thanks to a Week 8 loss to Lewis Central, 38-37. “Lewis Central is a tremendous athletic team, well coached. Man they are a handful and they got us in field position early and we got down 14-0 and two other times got down 14 and just proud of the resiliency and the heart of our kids. We missed an extra point to tie it at 35, but did take the lead with a field goal and at the end of the game we had the ball with a chance to win and came up short. A really good contest.”
Winterset is 7-2 and Clear Creek-Amana has a 6-3 record. Winterset has upped their win total in four consecutive season behind a special senior class. “A really solid group of kids. Our senior class has been a hungry group.” Sweeney says, “They have tremendous focus led by our captains and our two main captains would be Dawson Forgy on the offensive side of the ball, just a tremendous leader and workhorse for us and Blake Bellamy on the defensive side just a high energy linebacker and those two are as good as it gets in the state.”
Dawson Forgy has 1,723 yards and 25 touchdowns on 161 attempts. He’s averaging 10.7 yards per carry. Bellamy has 74 tackles with 19.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. Forgy is #1 in 4A in touchdowns and Bellamy is 2nd in solo tackles.
The winner faces either Decorah or Class 3A defending champion North Scott in the quarterfinals next week.
