(Corning) A 53-22 win over Ogden last week advances SW Valley to the round of 16 in the Class A Football Playoffs. The 7-2 Timberwolves will travel to #4 Woodbury Central on Friday.
Coach Anthony Donahoo says his team’s offensive production the last two weeks has stood out. “It’s been just phenomenal putting up over 80 points in the last two games and doing it predominantly on the ground. We put up over 400 yards on the ground. I was really impressed with Cade Myers, Isaac Curran, Bradlee Grantz, they all ran the ball really well to take that pressure off of Brendan Knapp and then the second half when they started keying on those other backs Brendan was able to come out and have a quiet 23 carry, 180 yard game with two touchdowns.”
Woodbury Central is 8-1. Their only hiccup was a 26-23 final against Tri-Center in Week 7. The Wildcats posted 221 yards passing and 247 rushing in their 46-12 first round win over AHSTW. “A very dynamic offense. We know for us to be successful on Friday night we are going to have to keep that offense off the field and do what SW Valley does. Play very physical up front, continue to get first downs, get 4-5 yards per carry, and then finish drives with points.”
Coach Donahoo points out his squad was motivated by their Week 8 loss to Mount Ayr. It was their first setback since the season opener and they responded with the program’s first ever playoff win. That includes Corning and Villisca before they became SW Valley. “Our guys were frustrated and angry and they wanted to prove who they really are. When you don’t have any playoff wins in 50 years at both the schools, they knew they wanted the district championship, but let’s go make some history on Friday night. I’m so proud of these boys. Most of them have been playing since they were freshmen and sophomores.”
The winner faces 5th rated Logan-Magnolia or #10 Mount Ayr for a trip to the dome next week.
