(Anita) CAM is one win away from polishing off a 2nd straight undefeated regular season. They’ll be in action at 4-3 Boyer Valley in Week 8.
Cougar coach Barry Bower reveals the message to the team this week is ‘finish.’ “One of the things we talked a little bit about is finishing. After the ball game on Friday nigh we just had to make sure we finish and take one game at a time which is what we’ve been doing all season. Finish the regular season out strong and then prepare yourself for the road ahead. We know we have a tough task and are going on the road against a gosh darn good Boyer Valley team. They have some skill and some big guys up front that can do some damage.”
CAM wasted no time putting away Coon Rapids-Bayard last week. They led 54-14 at the end of the first quarter and 74-14 by halftime. Lane Spieker ran for 222 yards and six touchdowns on only 10 carries last week. He also returned a punt for a touchdown and completed 2/3 passes for 54 yards and a TD. For the season he’s #1 in 8-player in rushing touchdowns with 41, #2 in total touchdowns with 51, #1 in all-purpose yards with 2,161, and #1 in rushing yards with 1,897.
Guys like Spieker and Colby Rich and Joe Kauffman, and Cade Ticknor have been the big playmakers, but the offensive line of Reese Oglesbee, Gavyn Jessen, and Nolan Hensley has been dynamite all season. Beyond that, the team has some depth that is a real luxury. Bower identifies Sam Foreman, Gabe Rouse, and Corbin Peach as a few that have really improved and are playing significant roles.
CAM has clinched the 8-Player, District 10 championship which is no small feat in this league. “I think our kids are gaining more confidence as the year goes along. They understood they had a tough task at hand and made sure they went through it with a great mindset. Bur our mindset has to be stronger. Now that we get to the postseason it’s going to get tougher and tougher. We have to make sure we prepare ourselves mentally.”
