(Des Moines, IA) — The Iowa Attorney General’s Office says the fatal shooting of a suspect by a Winnebago County sheriff’s deputy was entirely legally justified. Deputy Justin Douglas shot and killed 48-year-old James Anderson on September 11th in Thompson. Investigators say Anderson made a fake 911 call reporting an assault to lure officers to his apartment. Anderson allegedly pointed a gun at Douglas and the deputy drew his firearm and negotiated with him. Anderson later walked toward Deputy Douglas and raised his right hand with the gun. That’s when Douglas fired one shot and hit Anderson in the chest and he died at the scene. Assistant Attorney General Scott Brown said the decision to shoot Anderson was reasonable and legally justified under the circumstances.
