(Anita) CAM matches up with Exira-EHK in volleyball on Thursday night.
The Cougars are 6-6 after topping Coon Rapids-Bayard in four sets on Tuesday. “We have had a couple of lumps this week with girls out sick. Our challenge this week was playing together as a team in some different positions. We rose to the challenge. We had some dips and some highs and lows in there, but we got it done.”
Head coach Jenna Maiers identifies some of the key people that rose to the occasion. “We have a totally new setter. Reese Snyder stepped in to help us there. She’s done a really nice job these last couple of games. We had her training over the summer, because we didn’t know if Bree Bower would be back from an injury she suffered in softball. We had her training most of the summer anyway, so we were able to slide her in there. Jenna Platt stepped up and played some back row for us so everyone did their job.”
Eva Steffensen had a big match on Tuesday with 11 kills and 19 digs. The sophomore has a team best 72 kills on the year. “I think she’s definitely getting more comfortable this year. She’s understanding the game and the level of play a lot more. She’s really tough on herself and expects a lot. She puts in the work in practice and is producing.”
The Spartans are 1-5 and their only action all season long was at the Missouri Valley Tournament back on September 4th. “They haven’t played much this year so we don’t know too much about them other than what we know from last year. Honestly I just like to worry about what we are going to do on our side of the court. We have to take care of what we can do and hope that’s enough. So that’s what we’re going to do Thursday night.”
Marissa Spieker leads the Cougars with 127 digs on the year. Mallory Behnken has 45 kills in eight matches. After facing Exira-EHK on Thursday, CAM’s next competition will be at Paton-Churdan on Tuesday.
