(Guthrie Center) On the schedule this week for the ACGC cross country program is a meet on September 4th at Pella.
Charger coach Colin Shawgo was thrilled with the way things went in the team’s first meet at SE Valley last week. The boys came away with the team title and had individual champ Trevin Suhr. “That guy has been putting in a ton of work all summer and then this fall he’s just been outstanding. He’s really pushing the limits on what he can do. Both of us agreed that the goal needs to be sub 16:00 by the state meet. It’ll take a perfect race, but we both think we can get it done.”
Coach Shawgo says every one of the boys runners improved on their time from the same course last year by :45 to 1:00 which was pretty awesome to witness. “They run really, really well together.” Shawgo says, “The freshmen were up there doing exactly what they needed to be doing and to put that with the experience we have is awesome. Our depth is unreal, our pack running is unreal, this is shaping up to be a pretty special year.”
The girls team ran just four runners in their opener, but fared well. “We did have a bit of a depleted lineup both because of injuries and because of a volleyball conflict with our dual sporters. The girls that did show up ran spectacularly. Ava Campbell was outstanding for her first ever race. We had a couple of girls not too far behind that medaled and they weren’t quite expecting that so when they came across the line they were pretty ecstatic.”
