(Exira) Exira-EHK and Griswold get together in Week 1 football contest on Friday.
Spartan head coach Tom Petersen says it’ll be a big challenge with everything that Griswold has coming back. “The thing that jumps out is their offensive front. They’ve got quite a few kids coming back and they have a big time playmaker with Cale Swain. I’ve watched him on film and he’s able to provide quite a few different looks for them to run some things. They have quite a few seniors. Turner and Stirek have been pretty impressive when I’ve watched them on film.”
Exira-EHK will have Trey Petersen as their full-time starter at quarterback after he split duties at that position last year. Head coach Tom Petersen says the junior signal caller can make plays with his legs or arm. “We have a dual threat quarterback back there. He’s still working on some of the reads when it comes to different things with running the veer. He’s been doing pretty well as far as throwing the football, but going up against someone in a game situation is going to be a lot different.”
Coach Petersen comments on the bright spots from last week’s scrimmage against Glidden-Ralston. “I would say probably the improvement from the first 15 plays to the second 15 plays. Offensively we weren’t in sync. We moved the ball, but were inconsistent especially up front. We really struggled with the communication aspect, so that’s been something we’ve tried to talk about and emphasize this week in practice. Probably the biggest positive would be the passing game. It thought we did a pretty good job there with kids running routes and Trey finding some open receivers.”
Petersen says the team that makes the fewest mental mistakes, controls the football, and tackles well will have the upper hand.
