(Atlantic) Atlantic Superintendent Steve Barber discussed the Return to Learn Plan at Wednesday’s school board meeting.
In June, the Atlantic Community School District Board of Directors approved a revised Return to Learn plan developed by the Health and Safety Committee based on guidance from the Iowa Department of Public Health defining COVID as a childhood illness. These guidelines were provided to the schools last spring and last Thursday new guidance was provided.
Barber said masks and face shields will be available to students and staff if desired.
Barber said any staff or student who is positive for COVID-19 will be quarantined 10 days after the onset of their symptoms. The school purchased Rapid testing for staff members. If a staff member is experiencing COVID symptoms they will not be allowed at work. They will be able to coordinate with Mrs. Freund to get a rapid test and if they test negative they will be able to return to work once symptoms are gone. The illness policy for students is the same as pre-COVID. A student with a fever will be sent home; other symptoms will be evaluated by the nursing staff and the student will be sent home if deemed ill. The student will not be allowed back until symptom free. The cleaning system will continue as developed to address COVID last year. Students who are quarantined due to a positive case will have technology to access SeeSaw or Google Classroom, provided with materials, and receive class communication from teachers, but there will be no remote learning.
Barber said changes will be made as situations change.
