(Lewis) The fall hunting season will soon be here, and DNR fisheries biologist Bryan Hayes reminds hunters born after 1972 must take a hunters safety course to purchase a license. Hayes says the three-day course is available in Cass County starting August 10, 12, and 14th.
Hayes says Iowa residents under sixteen don’t have to purchase a license and hunt with a mentor without taking the hunter safety course. However, when they turn 16, the safety course will be required to purchase a hunting license. “It’s a good idea to take the course while you’re young and is available for anyone 11-years of age and up,” said Hayes. “An adult must accompany the eleven-year-olds to take the course.”
The classes will be held at the DNR Environmental Services Division Office on Sunnyside Lane. Those interested can register at iowadnr.gov and search hunter safety or call the Iowa Department of Natural Resource Office in Lewis. “These instructors are highly knowledgeable and have taught a lot of classes,” said Hayes. “It’s worthwhile for everyone to go this. Attendees pick up things that will make for a safer hunt.”
Hunters with more experience can take the course online.
