(Glenwood) Harlan alum Curt Schulte is the head boys basketball coach at Glenwood, a post he’s held since 2006.
Schulte says he was blessed to have great coaches, leaders, mentors, and role models during his high school athletic career at Harlan. “Legendary coach Curt Bladt. Just a great coach, great mentor, just a great leader. Then also coach Hosack and coach Gallinger. I don’t think there was a better coaching staff not only in the state of Iowa, but in the whole Midwest. Then also I was blessed to be under coach Lansing as a player and he had over 400 wins while he was there. I just had a lot of great coaches and that’s really why I got into coaching.”
His career in teaching and coaching began with an 11-year run at Millard North where he was on the football and basketball staff. “I just loved coaching I didn’t really care whether it was going to be boys or girls. I always wanted to be either a head football coach or head basketball coach. Those two sports were my passion and I loved those two sports the most. I love track and baseball also, but football and basketball were where I was leaning and it ended up being a head varsity basketball coach.”
He’ll be entering his 16th year at Glenwood this fall. It’s a community he’s grown very fond of. “It’s a great community. My family and I are blessed to be a part of this community. It’s a great place to raise kids. As far as coaching goes, everybody is all in. We believe in the multi-sport athlete and believe in success not just in the sport that you coach, but we want success in all sports. It’s sure fun to be a part of.”
He couldn’t imagine doing anything else for a living. “I just love coaching. I don’t always love the long two hour bus rides and some of those things, but I don’t think I’d want to be anywhere else but on the basketball court and coaching kids. I just really love it.”
Schulte’s been to a pair of state basketball tournaments and won it all in 2018, but above all else he says he’s proud of the progress the program has made as a whole, starting with the youth program on up.
