(Anita) CAM and St. Albert will face off in a substate baseball final once again. The Cougars play the Falcons in Glenwood on Tuesday night.
CAM won when these teams saw each other in the 2017 postseason, St. Albert returned the favor last year. Despite the fact the Falcons will be well tested out of the Hawkeye 10 Conference, the Cougars aren’t about to back down. Coach Dan Daugherty says, “I don’t think we are going to go in in awe of them at all. I expect us to come in ready to play and it should be a competitive ball game.”
Both teams had their work cut out for them to get to this point. St. Albert survived a scare against upset minded Exira-EHK with three runs in the final two innings of a 3-2 win on Saturday. CAM erased a six run deficit to Lenox in the District Finals. “I wasn’t sure after our body language when we gave up six in the 3rd, but I told them there was a lot of game left and we need to start chipping away. I was proud of the way they came back and pulled it out. That’s the sign of a good team.”
St. Albert is hitting .393 as a team and they average 10.4 runs per game. The big stick is Cy Patterson with a .561 average, 5 HR, and 68 RBI. Isaac Sherrill isn’t far behind, hitting .432 with 3 HR and 44 runs driven in. Brendan Monahan carries a .429 average with two home runs and 27 RBI. “They are really good. Patterson is a very good hitter, Sherrill, and Monahan, basically all of them up and down the lineup. They put the bat on the ball and then they like to bunt and steal so we’ll have to be ready for everything.”
CAM has an impressive offense of their own. In Class 1A, the Cougars rank 3rd in the state in home runs, 4th in runs scored, and 5th in RBI. St. Albert is in the top five for both RBI and stolen bases.
