Leonard Alm Sr., the son of Carl and Alice (Johnson) Alm, was born September 28, 1929, near Stanton, Iowa. He died December 28, 2020 at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota at the age of 91 years and 3 months.
Leonard attended school at Stanton through the 8th grade and then helped his dad on the farm. He was drafted during the Korean War and served as an engineer in the Army. After being honorably discharged, he took over the farming operation and began Alm Harvesting. On October 29, 1955, Leonard and Teresa Clare Heavey were united in marriage at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Omaha, NE. To this union seven children were born: Leonard, Tom, David, Dan, Jan, Teri, and Jeni. They lived in Stanton, Red Oak, and then rural Elliott where they ran the Allis Chalmers and Fertilizer Dealership from 1960 to 1967. They moved to Griswold and purchased the John Deere Dealership in 1967. They sold the dealership in 1971. Leonard was active in Alm Harvesting until a few years ago. Recently, he moved to Rochester, MN, to be closer to his daughter Jan.
Leonard was a member of the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, had been a member of the American Legion and enjoyed taking winter trips to Las Vegas.
Leonard is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Teresa on June 28, 1999; and his son, David on March 14, 1992.
He is survived by his children: Leonard Alm, Jr. and wife Cathy of LaVista, NE, Tom Alm and wife Monica of Ashland, NE, Dan Alm and wife Leigh Anne of Omaha, NE, Jan Alm and friend John Madacey of Rochester, MN, Teri Fisher of Omaha, NE, and Jeni Alm of Omaha, NE; his grandchildren: Chase, Amanda, Jacob, Jordan, Stephanie, Nicholas, Samantha, Ryan, Chelsea, Jonny, Alicia, and Alexander; his step grandchildren: Brian, Dan, Stephanie, and Christopher; and his 5 great grandchildren: Amelia “Millie”, Zayden, Alaya, Chloe, and Gentry.
A memorial mass will be held at Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, IA, on Saturday, July 24, 2021, at 10:30 AM. Interment will be in the Catholic section at Pleasant Township south of Griswold. Lunch with the family will be held at the Griswold Community Building, following the interment. Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is assisting the family.
