(Atlantic) The Atlantic School Board approved student fees, fuel contracts, spring coaching contracts, legislative priorities, and two pay applications at Wednesday’s School Board meeting.
Atlantic School’s Superintendent Steve Barber says the current student fee structure remained unchanged for the past three years. Barber didn’t feel changes needed to be made for the upcoming school year, and the board agreed to keep the entire fee structure the same.
The high school electronic fee is $60.00, band uniform fee, $25.00, varsity show choir, $75.00, J.V and freshman show choir, $50.00, and activity, (optional), $30.00. Middle School Instructional fees, $45.00, Band, (instrumental rental fee only), $30.00, and activity ticket, (optional), $30.00. Schuler students electronic fees, $40.00, and activity ticket, (optional), $30.00. Washington Elementary students will pay a $40.00 electronic fee and a $30.00 activity ticket (optional) fee.
Breakfast and lunch fees are as follows; Breakfast (all schools), $1.80, Adult breakfast, $2.00. Lunch prices; Washington, $2.55; Schuler Elementary, $2.75; Middle School, $2.75; High School, $2.80; and adult lunch prices are set are $3.95. This is a dime increase from last school year. The increase is not official.
The school district is seeing a significant increase in fuel costs for the upcoming school year. The school estimates it will use 10,000 gallons of gas and 6,000 gallons of diesel. The propane fuel usage is estimated at 25,000 gallons, and last school year, the district paid $1.02 per gallon of propane, and the lowest bid this year is $1.59. The school board awarded the ethanol, diesel, and propane contracts to the loan bidder-Olsen Fuel Supply. Two companies submitted bids for the propane contract. Olsen Fuel Supply submitted the low propane bid of $1.59, an unleaded ethanol bid of $2.47, #2 diesel, $2.27, and #1 diesel, $2.32. Last year’s bid came in at $1.79 for ethanol-blended gasoline, $1.26 for diesel #2, and $1.46 for #1 diesel. The total fuel cost to the district is $85,000.
The board also approved the following spring coaching contracts recommended by Atlantic Athletic Director Andy Mitchell. Head Boy’s Track: Abby Becker, 8th Grade Track: Trace Petersen, Head Girl’s Track: Matt Mullenix, Assistant Girls Track, Derek Hall, 7th Grade Track, Casey Pelzer, 8th Grade Girls Track, Taylor Williams, Head Boy’s and Girl’s Tennis: Mike McDermott, Assistant Tennis Coach: Cole Renken, Head Girls’ Soccer: Dan Vargason, Head Boys Soccer: Matt Smith, Assistant Girl’s Soccer: Alyssa Dovenspike, Assistant Boy’s Soccer: Mark Andersen, and Head Boy’s Golf; Ed Den Beste, and Head Girl’s Golf: Kathy Hobson.
The School Board also selected the following priorities to send to the Iowa Association of School Boards: Mental Health, Marketing-competitive wages, teacher recruitment and licensure, and local accountability and decision-making.
The School Board approved a pay application of $97, 631.74 for the parking lot project. The Board also approved a pay application of $290,390.60 for the athletic facilities upgrade project.
The School Board also approved the resignations of Amber Caudle, Middle School Paraprofessional, and Rob Hansen, High School Assistant Baseball Coach. The Board approved contract recommendations for Tori Dolch, Freshman Volleyball Coach, Adam Smith, Volunteer Football Coach, Katy Christianson, Volunteer Volleyball Coach, Bruce Henderson, Volunteer Cross Country Coach, and Paul Iekel-.5 special education instructor.
