(Area) Deer movement is on the increase as fawning season has arrived.
Motorists should be on the lookout for animals crossing the roadway. “Fawning season increases the deer movement. Don’t be surprised to see deer crossing the highway in front of you anytime of the day during the fawning season. Those does seek out secluded areas to drop those fawns. Be aware as you are driving and travelling this time of year.”
Bryan Hayes with the Iowa DNR Office in Lewis reminds individuals not to veer for deer. Another reminder is to leave wildlife in their natural habitat. “If you encounter or find one of those fawns be aware the doe is probably not far away. That doe is probably watching as you discover a fawn that is hiding in the grass or maybe even right in your flower bed. The best advice is always to leave that fawn lay.”
Hayes says the Iowa DNR does not rehab fawns because the best chance at survival is to leave it where it is.
