(Atlantic) The Atlantic City Council, at their meeting this evening, is expected to set a public hearing for June 16 on Ordinance #1009, changing the method of election run-offs.
Last week the Atlantic Planning and Zoning Committee discussed the issue. Atlantic City Administrator John Lund says Atlantic currently has a “plurality-takes-all” system. One only needs to get the most votes on the first and only ballot to win, so less than 50.01% of the vote is required to become the Mayor or member of the Council or Park Board. Lund says Iowa allows for two types of elections.

The board also discussed the best way to whittle down the candidates.

The Personnel and Finance Committee reviewed the options and unanimously recommended changing the election system to a majority, run-off system. The Council must make the change to the ordinance by August 1. It takes three readings to amend the ordinance.
