(UNDATED) — Iowa is on track to have its quietest severe weather season in history. The National Weather Service reports so far only three severe thunderstorm or tornado warnings have been issued. In notably light years in 1987 and 1993, there were 13 and 14 warnings issued respectively. A busy year could see up to 200 warnings. Iowa saw a total of 28 tornadoes touch down last year, which is well below the average number of around 50. Forecasters say this year conditions simply haven’t been conducive for strong storms.
