(Audubon) Audubon hosts a Class 1A State Qualifying Meet on Thursday.
Audubon boys track coach Monte Riebhoff outlines some of the events they feel confident in. “Some of the hurdle races we have a good shot to go in. The Shuttle Hurdle with Gavin Smith, the two Klocke boys (Ethan and Joel), and Brandon Jensen running that. Gavin will probably run the Highs and Lows. After that it’s up in the air. Our 4X100 has a pretty good shot. 4X200 has a decent shot.”
Coach Riebhoff adds Matthew Beisswenger has a shot in the long jump if he can regain his form and get back in the 20 foot range. “He probably has a pretty good shot. He’s done that just once so far and he’s only long jumped in about three meets so far. He’s going to have to improve what he’s done the last couple of meets.”
Riebhoff says they thought the 4X400 would be strength going into the year, but it turns out the 4X100 and 4X200 stack up better across the state. Entering this week the 4X100 ranked 7th in 1A and the 4X200 was 6th. Riebhoff says the times weren’t coming down they way he wanted in the 4X400, so “We switched about halfway through the season. We had some of those kids off the 4X400 run the 4X100. Low and behold the 4X100 and 4X200 I put them in at Guthrie Center in late April and they ran two of the best times in Class 1A.”
Gavn Smith came into the week with the state’s best time in the 110 Highs at 15.25 and the 3rd best mark in the 400 Lows at 56.13.
In Class 1A there are ten sites. The winner of each event is an automatic qualifiers. At large qualifiers will be made up of the next fourteen best marks statewide.
