(Avoca) It’s crunch time in the high school track season. The AHSTW girls will be in Treynor for a Class 2A State Qualifying Meet on Thursday.
Coach Traye Pelzer identifies Holly Hoepner in the hurdle races as well as a couple of relays that have a good chance to make it to Des Moines. “I have very high expectations. I think Holly has a very good chance to qualify in both the 100M and 400M Hurdles. Our 4X100 has improved a great deal so I’m hopeful that that will find its way in as well. Our Sprint Medley has potential as well. We have tough competition. Our district is packed with good teams. We’ll have to run well, PR, and hope for the best.”
The Sprint Medley is made up of Kaleah Guyer, Delaney Goshorn, Cora Comer, and Holly Hoepner. They ran a season best of 1:58.91 at the conference meet last week. The 4X100 has been consistently improving throughout the year. They clocked a season best 53.11 at Tri-Center on Monday, good enough for 24th fastest in Class 2A. “The 4X100 we have Holly Hoepner, Delaney Goshorn, Graycen Partlow, and Cora Comer. Each time our handoffs get a little bit better. That’s one of the fun events of the day that we really like to try and perfect. Bit by bit getting quicker with handoffs has brought our times down a good deal, almost a full second.”
The Lady Vikes were assigned to an especially stout site in Treynor. “Panorama looks like they are pretty well stacked up in a lot of areas. Clarinda has some great athletes as well and then of course Underwood will be there and we’ve been competing with Underwood all year. Good competition usually sets up for fun things to happen. The girls are ready for it and I think everyone is excited.”
In 2A there are two automatic qualifiers from each site. At large bids will be determined by the next eight best performances statewide.
